New Delhi, March 12: Opposition members in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday criticized the government's privatisation of various railway operations, claiming it has compromised safety, leading to accidents and the loss of many lives.
During a discussion on the Ministry of Railways' functioning, N R Elango of the DMK accused the government of reducing 2 million railway jobs through contractualisation and outsourcing of the workforce.
Elango pointed out that after the BJP government assumed power in 2015, a Niti Aayog committee proposed a long-term vision to privatise key segments of India's vast railway network. Since then, the BJP-led government has implemented several privatisation measures through various strategies, he added.
